U.S. Senate advancing possibility for Sentence Reform
On October 22, the United States Senate has advanced a bill that could lead to sentence reform. I’m encouraged by this legislation. If the house advances the bill, and the entire Congress chooses to pass the legislation, President Obama has given signs that he would sign the bill into law. Tens of thousands of people in federal prison would benefit from this law. The new law would allow those people in prison to have their sentences reviewed. They could argue that they’ve prepared themselves in way that continued incarceration no longer serves the interest of justice. I think the stars are in alignment to see meaningful prison and sentence reform. These advances will lower our nation’s wrong spirited commitment to mass incarceration.
