Today I had a busy day. I left my house early for a drive to Stockton. At 9:30 I spoke at a conference sponsored by the San Joaquin County Probation Department. The audience of about 200 people included members of the local law enforcement community, elected officials, and citizens who had an interest to improve outcomes of California’s criminal justice system. Following my presentation, I got in my car and drove back to San Francisco. In the late afternoon, I taught my final class at San Francisco State University. Teaching a full year in the university’s criminal justice program enabled me to contribute to the education of several hundreds students. I appreciated the experience and the warm welcome that I received from so many. As a university lecturer, my level of credibility rose to a level that attracted interest from the national media. Various television, newspaper, radio, and Internet coverage allowed me to influence perceptions of more people. Besides the opportunity to influence, I also derived considerable experience that will help me become a more effective communicator.
