On August 12, I will celebrate my first year of liberty from the Bureau of Prisons after 26 years of imprisonment. I am not completely free, as I remain under the jurisdiction of a federal probation officer. My legal status is known as “supervised release,” and in my case, the conditions are not so stringent. The record I built during my decades in confinement prepared me for an easy transition back into society. As a consequence, the probation officer who supervises me has offered considerable amounts of support. In August, after I’ve completed my first year in society, I will request a federal judge to grant me full liberty. I am hopeful the judge will agree that I have earned my freedom and grant the motion. Obviously, I don’t know how the court will respond, but I am hopeful.
