Today I wrote a sales presentation. Writing a sales presentation requires the same process and structure as any other type of writing. First I must consider the audience. When I write a sales presentation, I have two audiences. Those who work on the sales force must understand the objective, strategy, and tactics behind the presentation. I must also consider how the presentation will help the sales rep show the benefits of our product to each prospect. The presentation must have a clear opening, a body that serves to educate the prospect, and a close where the sales rep asks for the order. The presentation cannot be a lecture like those I used to write for the university. Rather, the presentation must rely upon skillful questioning to understand the prospect’s needs and then help the prospect appreciate the value and benefits of our product. I use the same techniques in writing such a sales presentation as I use in every other writing project. First I stare at the wall. Then I conceptualize a plan. Finally, I work on drafts. I love the creative process and challenge.
