I received a series of questions from someone who was looking to learn more about America’s prison system. First, she asked how many people served time in America’s jail and prisons each year. We currently incarcerate more than 2.2 million people in the United States. But that figure doesn’t tell the entire story. The criminal justice system processes more than 12 million people each year. Obviously, not all of those people go to prison. Many are filtered out before they’re convicted and sentenced. Still, our criminal justice system touches the lives of too many people. That is why prisons have become mainstream. Besides the people it touches directly with arrests or interrogations, every family member of someone who is incarcerated feels the pain of confinement. The criminal justice system is a big and growing market.
