Today I had a great meeting with an old friend, John. I met John when I was serving a portion of my sentence at the Lompoc Federal Prison Camp. John started an Internet advertising company in his living room during the late 1990s, and the firm became so successful that he was able to grow his company’s client base sufficiently to launch an initial public offering. The company’s stock traded on the Nasdaq, eventually reaching a market capitalization north of $600 million. Unfortunately, as CEO John made some leadership decisions that he later came to regret. We met after he pleaded guilty to violating securities laws that resulted in his serving a 15-month prison sentence. John and I became friends soon after he surrendered to Lompoc Federal Prison Camp. I hadn’t seen him since authorities released John from prison, back in 2007. During the past seven years, he has built another successful company, this one focusing on social media advertising. I’m impressed with John’s drive and entrepreneurship. I was happy to meet him for lunch today, and to learn of how he successfully rebounded after a term in federal prison.
