Tomorrow I’m taking the day off to fly to San Francisco. I need to meet with my probation officer. The meeting shouldn’t last more than an hour. Since late last May, I’ve been working in Southern California. My work requires that I recruit self-driven, self-motivated individuals who aspire to perform at a high level. I’ve been training for that kind of work every since my journey through struggle began inside of America’s prison system. Anyone can use the strategies that empowered me to grow. I strive to teach those strategies to anyone and everyone who wants to live passionately, always in a values-based, goal-oriented way. Yet I find a huge difference in working with people from a corporate setting than I found in working with people in a prison setting. In the corporate setting, the people with whom I work more easily identify with the relationship between their decisions and their prospects for success. By contrast, those in prison don’t see that relationship so easily. Many people in custody have a hard time grasping that they have the power within to influence better outcomes in their life. This is an unfortunate outcome of the way that we’ve designed our judicial system.
