When the stock market opened this morning, I sold my shares in Go Pro. Immediately thereafter, I purchased shares in El Pollo Loco, which trades under the stock market symbol LOCO. Loco means “crazy” in Spanish, and those shares went crazy today. I was very happy to earn a few dollars from speculating in the stock. My wife, Carole, would rather that I didn’t speculate in the stock market. She doesn’t appreciate the value of volatility. Where I see opportunity, she sees risk. And she’s right, of course. The stock market comes with risk. Yet I’ve found that robust markets bring opportunities, and those who spot them, then take action, can build fortunes. Carole reminds me that people can also lose fortunes. I respond to her with an analogy, telling her that the stock market is like a rollercoaster. It goes up and it goes down. Yet the only people who get hurt are those who jump off. Today the broader stock market indices lost more than three hundred points. But we made money with our purchase of shares in LOCO, and I’m pleased with that outcome.
