Today is Labor Day, and I’m laboring with heavy, complicated thoughts in this release-from-prison journal entry. They concern my liberty, or lack thereof. A few weeks ago, a federal judge signed an order to terminate my period of “supervised release.” I published those orders on my website, and I wrote about the experience. I received unprecedented support from my probation officer, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and a federal judge. The complicated nature of my sentence, however, meant that although we thought I was free, it turns out that I’m not free. The U.S. Parole Commission, apparently, has a hold on me for several years or decades still. I don’t have clarity on how these complications will influence my liberty. All I know is that although Carole and I thought that a federal judge had freed me from supervision, it turns out that the government still has a hold on me. I’m sure that I’ll learn more later.
