My mother and grandmother joined me for dinner tonight. Although Carole and I moved to Southern California nearly four months ago, the only time I’m able to see my mom and grandma is when we meet for dinner. Although the decades I served in prison prepared me for the challenges of imprisonment, they did not prepare me for the nuances of a social life. If the conversation doesn’t concern business, strategy, or creating plans, I feel completely out of place. I simply don’t know how to converse in the ways that others find so easy. It’s as if I speak a foreign language. I’m aware of such inadequacies whenever I’m taken away from my work. Someday I may develop social graces that others find so easy, but I don’t know when someday will come.
