Today we took another step closer toward completing my obligation to the criminal justice system. We don’t know what type of outcome we’ll have. All we know is that we’ve put the decision in the hands of the US Parole Commission by filing a formal request for early termination of my Special Parole. To be clear, let me explain. After completion of my first year in liberty from 26 years in the Bureau of Prisons, my federal probation officer, an assistant US Attorney, and a federal judge agreed that I no longer needed supervision. The judge signed an order that liberated me from conditions of Supervised Release. A few days later, we learned that my sentence obligated me to the jurisdiction of the US Parole Commission under a term of Special Parole. The federal judge lacked jurisdiction to terminate Special Parole. I am currently scheduled to remain on Special Parole for another three years. Since we filed a motion with the US Parole Commission requesting early termination, a group of people on the Parole Commission must review the file and make a determination of whether my case warrants continued supervision. I anticipate a decision before the end of this year.
