When I woke this morning Carole showed me the final project she completed for the module she is working on. I am so proud of her pursuit of excellence. Every day she researches articles online or reads from textbooks. Then she synthesizes all that she learned into a compelling narrative, a graphical image, or a video presentation that demonstrates her mastery of the subject matter. We began our commitment to building her career in nursing in 2004. I still remember the day. We were visiting on a Saturday morning in the visiting room at a federal prison in Colorado. The job market was difficult. We knew that we needed to find a career that would sustain Carole through my final decade of confinement. Carole’s mother is a nurse, and Carole told me that she could pursue an education that would lead to her becoming a nurse. Great! I made the commitment to deploy resources we earned through my writing to support her through school. She made a commitment to learning algebra, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and so many other prerequisites that universities would require before they’d admit Carole into nursing school. I admired her tenacity then, but now, as we approach the completion of her master’s degree, I have more admiration for her than ever. She truly inspires me, and I’m grateful for every moment with her.
