I spent the day with a friend of mine who truly inspires me. His name is John and I met John while I was incarcerated at the Federal Prison Camp in Lompoc. John is a great entrepreneur, and I wrote the story of how he launched a successful business from his living room. Eventually, that business became a publicly traded corporation with a market value that exceeded several hundred million dollars. He served a brief sentence for a violation of securities laws. Yet rather than allowing the difficulty to cripple his life, he began a new business that thrives. Today I spoke with him about Prison Professor, the venture that I’m about to launch. I wanted to share my ideas and business plan with him, then learn from any advice that he might offer. I learned a great deal during our conversation. Then I returned to my desk and wrote until after eight in the evening. I’m inspired to build something that will improve the outcomes of our criminal justice system and also improve the lives of people who live in the midst of struggle.
