Federal Prison Camp
What is it like to serve time inside of a Federal Prison Camp?
That’s a good question. In my work as a prison consultant, clients frequently ask me about a federal prison camp. They want me to help them understand what it would be like to serve time inside of a federal prison camp. White-collar offenders who retain me as a prison consultant do not have any experience with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). When they hear different terms such as:
- Federal Prison Camp (FPC)
- Satellite Prison Camp (SPC)
- Satellite Low Security Federal Prison
- Low Security Federal Prison

Presentence Investigation
What should you know about the Presentence Investigation (PSI)? How will the Presentence Investigation influence your life? Who is going to help you understand the relevance of the Presentence Investigation and how to influence it?
Any individual who faces a charge for a federal crime should educate himself on the presentence investigation. The presentence investigation can have enormous influence on a defendant’s journey through the Bureau of Prisons.

Prison Advice
Have you been charged with a federal crime? If so, you may want to retain a prison consultant. You need prison advice. Why? When prosecutors bring a case in federal court, they succeed more frequently than not. When prosecutors succeed, defendants frequently find themselves in federal prison. A competent prison consultant will offer invaluable prison advice that can have an enormous influence on the individual’s life.
Prison advice isn’t only about the type of boilerplate that a sleazy prison consultant offers. When people serve a few months in a single institution, or when they don’t have any experience of prison at all, they’re hardly qualified to dispense prison advice. A competent prison consultant will have both depth and breadth of experience that makes them invaluable for the defendant who doesn’t know anything about the prison journey.

Prison Consultant
When clients retain me to work as their prison consultant, they are making an investment in their future. Some people don’t fully understand the value that a competent prison consultant provides. They mistakenly believe that since they’ve retained a defense attorney, they do not need a prison consultant. They should ask their defense attorney what level of experience he or she has with regard to navigating a journey through federal prison. If the attorney doesn’t have that experience, they cannot replace the role of a competent prison consultant.

I distinguish a competent prison consultant from the man charlatans who brand themselves as prison consultants. Some people market themselves as prison consultants without the appropriate background. For example, I know some individuals who previously had careers inside of the Bureau of Prisons. Yet working as a prison counselor or a prison guard doesn’t qualify someone for to work as a competent prison consultant. Let me explain why.
Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP)
My role as a prison consultant requires that I frequently discuss various aspects of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP). Those who retain me for personal prison consulting frequently ask about one specific program: The BOP’s Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). All people who face time in federal prison should learn how the Residential Drug Abuse Program can influence their journey through federal prison.
As of this writing, in 2015, the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) is the only program within the federal Bureau of Prisons that can result in an administrative time cut. What does that mean? Well, the answer is quite simple. Those who qualify for the Residential Drug Abuse Program, and those who complete RDAP successful, will leave prison one year sooner than they would be released if they did not complete the Residential Drug Abuse Program.

Sentencing
In addition to publishing content that relates to sentencing on PrisonProfessor.com, and featuring daily podcasts on MichaelSantos.com about sentencing, I work with those who retain me for prison consulting on matters pertaining to sentencing, especially sentencing in federal court.
Let me tell you a story about James, a white-collar offender who retained me as a prison consultant. Initially, Bob planned on deferring all maters to the defense attorney that he hired. Through Internet research, Bob found my website at PrisonProfessor.com. While browsing through PrisonProfessor.com, Bob learned about my experience of going through 26 years in federal prison. He watched videos where I described various aspects of the process and he considered testimonials from others who worked with me on preparing sentence-mitigation packages.
