In addition to publishing content that relates to sentencing on PrisonProfessor.com, and featuring daily podcasts on MichaelSantos.com about sentencing, I work with those who retain me for prison consulting on matters pertaining to sentencing, especially sentencing in federal court.
Let me tell you a story about James, a white-collar offender who retained me as a prison consultant. Initially, Bob planned on deferring all maters to the defense attorney that he hired. Through Internet research, Bob found my website at PrisonProfessor.com. While browsing through PrisonProfessor.com, Bob learned about my experience of going through 26 years in federal prison. He watched videos where I described various aspects of the process and he considered testimonials from others who worked with me on preparing sentence-mitigation packages.
Bob had never heard his attorney speak about a sentence-mitigation package. The attorney focused on the judicial proceedings, and he would represent Bob during the sentencing hearing. But after Bob read through my work, watched videos I produced, and listened to podcasts on sentencing that I produced each day, he took the first step to learn more about the sentencing hearing. Bob ordered the lesson plan that I wrote on sentencing from the website.
After reading through the guidebook that I wrote on sentence mitigation strategies, Bob visited my author page on Amazon.com. When he saw all of the books that I wrote about the federal prison system, he contacted me to ask how I could help him prepare for sentencing. Bob contacted me before he had even been convicted. He wanted to prepare for sentencing just in case he would be found guilty.
By retain me to serve as his prison consultant, I could offer Bob insight that his attorney could not. We worked together to craft a personal narrative. The narrative would help Bob persuade the court and the Bureau of Prisons to consider him for the totality of his life—and not simply the criminal charge. That investment of time that we spent together resulted in Bob’s positioning himself for much lower sentence. Further, the work we did to prepare for sentencing had the additional benefit of positioning him for a much more successful journey through prison.
If you’re facing a sentencing hearing, I urge you to work with a competent prison consultant at the soonest possible time. I offer guidance through books and lesson plans on PrisonProfessor.com. Contact me if I can be of personal assistance as you prepare for sentencing.
