Prison Consulting: Journaling After Release (Days 699-705)
Sunday, July 12 through Saturday, July 18, 2015
Sunday, July 12 (Healthcare Fraud)
Today I had to work for a client who recently was indicted for healthcare fraud. It’s a shame. He is an elderly physician who lost at trial. I worked with him to prepare for the sentencing hearing. My role is to help clients position themselves in such a way that the judge will consider the defendant for more than the criminal charge. The client who retained me led a distinguished life. It’s tragic that errors in judgment now expose him to confinement. I will not make a statement on the guilt or innocence issue—only that prison seems wholly inappropriate in this case. That said, I think it likely that the judge will sentence the elderly man to a few years in prison.
Monday, July 13 (Dr. Love Television)
Carole and I drove to Hollywood today to film two television programs that will air next weekend. Dr. Ann Love hosts the talk show each week and she has an audience of more than 6 million people. We’re hoping to inspire that audience with the story of our marriage and strategy for overcoming struggle. As I worked through the process, I had ideas about how I could host a show. But I’d need to create something for a bigger a market than I’m currently serving. I have a lot that I still need to accomplish on my five-year plan.
Tuesday, July 14 (Belize Videos)
Today I recorded a series of videos around a new product I’m developing. The videos highly an opportunity that I’ve grown very excited about. It’s an opportunity to own appreciating assets in appreciating markets. I am sharing the strategies that work for me and I’m inviting others to participate in the opportunities. Those opportunities include owning land in the extraordinary oceanfront communities of Belize. In addition to filming the videos, I’m writing an ebook, launching a website, and I’m preparing a series of webinars as well. Those who want to own real estate with nothing down, and with incredible financing terms, may want to check it out. The opportunity beats the ridiculous strategy of purchasing bonds that don’t yield anything. At least that’s my perspective.
Wednesday, July 15 (Johnny Dumas)
I had the privilege of interviewing Johnny Lee Dumas today. Johnny is one of the most successful podcasters on the Internet. He launched Entrepreneur On Fire less than three years ago. During that time, he has built the podcast into a fabulously successful machine. He now receives more than 1 million downloads each month. Although his show did not generate any revenues during its first nine months, since then Entrepreneur On Fire has brought in more than $5 million in revenues. Products and services the show has created have earned more than $3 million net profits. For that reason, he’s an inspiration for me. I hope to emulate his success and the influence he has had on the making of a better world.
Thursday, July 16 (President to Prison)
President Obama visited the El Reno prison in Oklahoma today. I spent time inside of that prison on a couple of occasions. It pleases me to see that President Obama is bringing awareness to the issues of our ineffective prison system. It’s ineffective because our prison confine far too many people for sentences that are far too long. Further, the system fails to offer mechanisms that would incentivize a pursuit of excellence. I am blessed to have overcome the obstacles that derail success for so many people who are exposed to prisons. It’s my hope that we will see reforms that result in prisons being used to confine those who prey upon society. We need alternatives for those who break laws but do not require imprisonment. President Obama’s visit to El Reno suggests that major reforms may come soon. I’ll continue efforts to bring more awareness on why those reforms can lead to safer communities—especially if they include mechanisms that allow people to work toward earning freedom.
Friday, July 17 (Podcast with Lawyer)
I interviewed a lawyer today who is about to surrender to prison. She retained us for consulting services, rightfully anticipating that we could help. We’ve offered an abundance of written content that will guide preparations for her and her family. During our podcast episode today, I responded to questions she had and offered insight that I hope will ease her journey ahead. Those who listen to the Earning Freedom podcast will learn a great deal about how prisons operate and how to succeed inside of them.
Saturday, July 18 (Root and Rebound Speech)
I’m typing this entry while I’m on a Southwest Airlines flight bound for Oakland. Later this evening I’ll be delivering the keynote speech for Root and Rebound, a nonprofit organization that creates program and offers services to help formerly incarcerated people transition into society successfully. Leaders of Root and Rebound invited me to deliver the keynote earlier this year and I accepted, hoping to advance their cause. Each year more than 750 thousand people return to society from prison. Community leaders like Root and Rebound in Oakland offer a real resource for those who need assistance. I’m happy to make this contribution.
