I’m doing some preliminary work to launch a new business. Upon my release from prison a year ago, my friend Justin and I launched a venture to sell The Straight-A Guide. It’s a video based program that teaches people from at-risk populations strategies to prepare for law-abiding, contributing lives. We’ve had some success selling the program to various government agencies or municipalities. Our business model is quite simple. We charge a fee of $7,500 for a one-year license agreement. Institutions that purchase our “enterprise license” have the right to use the material we developed to teach people in their facilities for a full year. Our challenge was that we lacked sufficient capital to scale the program on a national basis. Customers wanted us to become “evidence based” before they would sign large purchase orders with us. Since we would have to wait several years before we could become evidence based, we’ve had to make some strategic adjustments to keep our organization growing. The new business I’m testing will have some similarities to our Straight-A Guide program. We intend to sell licensing agreements to defense attorneys, and those licensing agreements will allow the attorneys to pass along our information to their clients. I did some work on this project today, and I’m looking forward to launching a new Internet site around the idea before the end of this month.
