I read that the famous musical artist Jay-Z called on leaders to build more schools and fewer prisons. He has the power to spread that crucial message to millions of people around the world. We’ve seen a growing amount of attention to the injustices of our nation’s massive prison system. It’s unfortunate that leaders have allowed our nation’s system of justice to produce such horrific outcomes. As prisons operate today, from my perspective, the system itself perpetuates intergenerational cycles of failure. The Michael G. Santos Foundation has worked to improve the outcomes of our nation’s prison system. Yet artists like Jay-Z have the massive platform necessary to begin truly moving the needle. I’m glad that he is calling for prison reform, and I’m glad that we’ve seen some movement in that direction. I always expected our country to make improvements to the criminal justice system. Although those improvements will move slowly, I’ll continue playing whatever role I can play to advance the effort.
