Today I had to give one of our new hires a wakeup call. When I recruited people to work for our firm, I created a system that I based on our Straight-A Guide program. The system filtered out candidates who did not strike me as being self-driven, self-motivated, and obsessively focused on success. Despite the hurdles I put people through during the hiring process, not everyone that I’ve hired behaved in ways that would show their 100% commitment to success. One of my colleagues soft-peddled his dissatisfaction with one of the people I hired. Rather than being straight with him, my colleague gave him a warning, telling him that he’d better get it together over the next week. I took a different approach. I invited the man into my office. As soon as he sat down, I told him that I wanted to be realistic with him. “You’re fired,” I said. “You’ve got to own that. I don’t want to give any misleading indications here. You have one week to bring that passion and energy that you purported to have. If you don’t, you will not be working here any longer.” By giving that direct approach, I felt certain that he would have a wakeup call. It worked. The man’s performance picked up considerably throughout the day.
