This morning I fell face down during a run. It’s the second time I’ve fallen during a run since my release from prison. While incarcerated, I don’t ever remember falling during a run, but I remember tripping a few times in ways that caused my ankle to sprain. Those sprains could be painful. Today I fell for the same reason that I fell last fall. I run in the early morning, way before dawn. Ordinarily, I begin my run between 3:50 and 4:10 am. I know the hour is early, but it’s the only time that I can get out there. Either I have to run at the early hour or I have to adjust my values and goals. A commitment to fitness remains one of my highest priorities, and running long distances is one of the ways that I demonstrate my commitment to fitness. Since I’m not willing to abandon my commitment to fitness, I need to run in the early morning. Ordinarily, I run in my neighborhood. The streets are well lit, and since most people are sleeping during those early hours, I feel safe because there aren’t any cars on the road. This week I’ve been running distances of between 12 and 13 miles, as it’s important for me to reach my yearly goal of 2,400 miles. While I was between my ninth and tenth mile this morning, I tripped. I was hyper alert as I was going down for two reasons. In my right hand, I carried my new iPhone 6+ and I didn’t want to drop it; also, I was scheduled to film a series of commercials later this morning so I didn’t want to scrape my face. I broke the fall with my left hand, but the momentum kept me pushing forward and I scraped my face along the dirt. The fall brought a good scratch to the right of my right eye, but the puffiness didn’t come out until late in the afternoon. I was still able to film and I preserved my iPhone. I have a few aches from the fall, but overall I’m okay. I stood up after run, dusted myself off, and continued until I hit my goal for the day.
