Journal of today’s activities:

I spent many hours doing clerical work today. I call it “clerical work” because it is a distraction from the creative work that I should be doing. Instead of writing new content, I had to navigate my way around a complicated software program in order to update templates on our organization’s website. This type of work takes a lot of time because I’m not as proficient as I would like to be with web development. I worked side by side with an expert, but as a consequence of my initial design of the template, I had to go through each page to make changes. The template has more than 400 pages, so it was a time-consuming project. These are the pains of a growing organization.

Journal of today’s activities:

Today I met with the Chief Probation Officer of Napa County and her team. I am very happy to have had a full hour to describe our Straight-A Guide Cognitive Skills Development Program. Ms. Butler and her team gave me their full attention while I spoke about the origins of our program and the value we could add to any organization that worked with people who were vulnerable to problems with the criminal justice system. After I left Napa county, I had dinner with my friend and mentor, Lee Nobmann. Lee and I discussed the steps that Justin and I are taking to develop our organization. Lee encouraged me to find and train more formerly incarcerated individuals who can work with us to teach the Straight-A Guide program to people in custody. I’m looking forward to bringing another facilitator on my next training day at the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall.

Journal of today’s activities:

The sent file on my email shows that I sent emails to 74 different people today. That’s a lot of work for a Sunday. I found it necessary to avoid my run both yesterday and today in order to catch up on these administrative tasks that are associated with the business I’m building. I needed to let others know about efforts I’m making to contribute to a better criminal justice system. In the midst of my work I received a call from the Superintendent of a Washington State Prison. He invited me to visit the state for the purpose of delivering a TEDx talk inside of the prison. I’m looking forward to that opportunity in March.

Journal of today’s activities:

Today I spent several hours writing a lengthy article that provided the backstory of how and why PBS NewsHour took an interest in our work. That social media commitment takes a lot of time, but documenting my journey is an essential part of my strategy. I posted the article on my website, then I did the follow up work so that others could find it. That process led me to a website that measured days between dates. Somehow, I lost track of my days. I’ve actually been free from prison for 181 days today, so earlier entries are off.

Speaking to thousands of leaders at Santa Clara Convention Center

Speaking to thousands of leaders at Santa Clara Convention Center

Today I addressed an audience of more than 1,500 Silicon Valley movers and shakers at the Joint Venture Silicon Valley State of the Valley Conference. I challenged those business and government leaders to think big when contemplating need to transform our nation’s criminal justice system. While at the conference, I spoke with Mayor Chuck Reed, telling him that I was proud to be working with Mario Maciel of the gang taskforce in San Jose. Immediately after my speech, Carole and I rushed home to meet with the film crew from PBS NewsHour. Before getting out of the convention center, several community leaders stopped to talk with me about the work that I’m doing. More opportunities will open from this work our organization does to broaden awareness about the injustices of America’s criminal justice system. Once Carole and I arrived at our home, I sat for an interview with the PBS anchor Jeff Brown. The PBS NewsHour will broadcast that episode later this spring, which will bring our work to the attention of a national audience.

Preparing to Teach at San Bruno Jail

Preparing to Teach at San Bruno Jail

A crew from PBS filmed me for a segment on the NewsHour television program. First the crew filmed me as I taught inside of the San Bruno Jail. An amazing experience and I’m going to write a separate article about it. Then the news crew traveled to SFSU to film me as I taught a classroom filled with 80 criminal justice students. Following that, Carole and I drove to the Capital Club in Silicon Valley, where we enjoyed a spectacular dinner with other people who were going to present at the Joint Venture Silicon Valley State of the Valley Conference. We then checked into the Hilton across the street from the Santa Clara Convention Center, where I was scheduled to speak tomorrow.

Journal of today’s activities:

To ensure that I was ready for camera crews of PBS NewsHour, Carole and I booked a hotel in Milbrae. We drove to Stanford in the evening for a meeting with journalist fellow who is researching ways to improve the plea-agreement process. While at Stanford, a man walked over to introduce himself. His name was Rudy and I knew him from time that we served together in Lompoc. Rudy was at Stanford to receive some training in entrepreneurship. He recently was released after 20 years. He told me about the huge struggles that he is facing, including homelessness and finding steady employment at a livable wage. I hope to create opportunities to help Rudy and other formerly incarcerated individuals transition into the labor market.

New Suit For Silicon Valley Speech

New Suit For Silicon Valley Speech

I spent the day preparing for some of the biggest events of my career. On Thursday the PBS NewsHour will film me in several locations. The crew will film me teaching inside of the San Bruno Jail. Then the film crew will film me as I teach at San Francisco State University. On Thursday evening, I will attend a networking event at the Capital Club in Silicon Valley. On Friday the PBS film crew will record me as I present at the Santa Clara Convention Center in front of 1,500 people. And on Friday afternoon, the PBS Film crew will film Carole and me in our home. Last minute preparations are in order, including picking up a new suit I bought especially for the Santa Clara event.

With Dr. Angela Haick, Dr. Amy Smith, and Dr. Elizabeth Brown

Two professors from SFSU accompanied me to Juvenile Hall in Santa Clara County. I left my house at 4:30 am to ensure that I would be in the Oakland area by 5:45. I picked up Professor Elizabeth Brown and Professor Amy Smith. Both of those scholars research innovative violence prevention programs and I asked them to accompany me so that they could watch me teach. By watching as I interacted with the young men who were proceeding through our program, I hoped that Professor Brown and Professor Smith would agreed to design a research instrument that would show the effectiveness of our Straight-A Guide as a cognitive skills development program. We strive to change the way people think, showing that they can work toward becoming law-abiding, contributing citizens. The photo shows me with Professor Smith, Professor Brown, and Dr. Angela Haick.

PBS NewsHour

PBS NewsHour

While the more than 100 million people watched the Seattle Seahawks crush the Broncos in the Super bowl, I worked all day at my computer. I had to prepare for some major events that I have scheduled during the upcoming week. Tomorrow I’ll leave my house early for a drive to San Jose. I’ll spend the day at the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall. I enjoy working with community leaders who use our Straight-A Guide Cognitive Skills Development Program as a resource for teaching young people how to transform while living in adverse conditions. Later in the week I’m scheduled for two separate events that could have a monumental influence on the development of my career. The PBS NewsHour will film me at three separate events:

  • Teaching inside of a San Francisco Jail,
  • Teaching at San Francisco State University, and
  • Speaking at the 2014 State of the Valley Conference in the Santa Clara County Convention Center.

The PBS episode will not be broadcast until the summer, but I’m enthusiastic about the network broadcasting our work to a national television audience.
